Leslie Truex

Leslie Truex is a long-time work at home mom from Virginia. She has been working from home since 1993. She started working from home “before the Internet was big” as she states. Leslie admits finding work back then was a little more difficult than it might be today. The only telecommuting jobs that she could find at first were in sales.

She first sold for Getting to Know You and some real estate. She says these were easy jobs to obtain, however, once the Internet began to grow so did her opportunities for work at home jobs. Leslie was soon able to find contract work in research and writing, and later, in 2001, began telecommuting as an adoption social worker, which she still does today.

Leslie shares that her road to working from home full time was not an easy one. She, like many people, fell for some scams along the way. She says that though she didn’t immediately make a full time income, she realized that she was better off than if she were working a job outside the home because with those jobs came additional expenses.

She comments, “I was able to live better by working from home.” As most work at home moms, she enjoyed the lifestyle and even though today her children are in school all day she says, “I could work a regular job, but I love the freedom and flexibility of working at home too much to go back to commuting.”

Leslie shares that there are some great resources out there for those wanting to work from home. Some of her favorite sites for finding job listings that are updated often include: Craigslist, CareerBuilder, and MediaBisto, which are free resources and HomeJobStop, which is a paid but affordable job lead website.

Leslie has telecommuted on and off since 1990, but has worked solely from home since 2000. She offers some good advice to others wanting to do the same thing, which is to “Do a work-at-home job search the same way you'd do a regular job search. Employers with work-at-home jobs are looking for people with skills and experience not typists and envelope lickers. Focus on your skills and experience, create quality resume, and apply, apply, apply.”

Leslie is all about helping others work from home, as she is the owner of Work at Home Success.com. You can also find her at The Pajama Mama.
