Does Your Family Think You’re Playing?
By Christina Lemmey | March 14, 2008
My family thinks I’m a computer addict. Seriously. If I disappear for even a 5-minute bathroom break, they immediately ask if I’m checking email.
It was quite the novelty last May when I began my internship with Kelly McCausey at Moms Talk Radio because I was spending much more time on the computer. My girls saw me learning new software and using the neglected computer microphone and it looked like fun to them.
There was no convincing them that I was learning something new that I could possibly (hopefully!) get paid for!
Well, since I started getting paid last August and have gained more clients, my computer time has increased significantly. I also have a cool headset which my kindergartener uses to perform the latest Hannah Montana concerts. She has also recorded a few original stories and even contributed to my podcast.
Even my dear husband jokes that I’m a blogging diva and rolls his eyes when I say I HAVE to use the computer.
I’m so very glad that I enjoy what I do but even though I call this “work”, my family just thinks the computer is for fun and games. Hopefully one of these days the light will dawn on them but until the kids are older, I guess I’ll just listen to them sighing that, “Mom’s on the computer…again!”

It might take some time. My husband always believed in me and what I was doing (as I suspect your family does with you) but I doubt he actually took it as seriously as he does now.
When I surpassed his income he began taking it very seriously! LOL Then the talk about me being his sugar mama kicked in.
And on a side note, when I interviewed you last year for Kelly I just knew you were going to get that job with her. And as you grew within that position and then began your own show I knew you’d be successful…you’re made for this and you’re going to have a very successful business…I just know it!
I love working with you!

Hi there,
Well…my hubby USED to think I was just playing. But since then, my income has improved quite a bit and he has changed his tune. LOL!
He still makes a comment every now and then about being on here so much. Just says…Can’t you just limit it to 8 hours just like a normal job…and
lol
just 5 days a week?? He just doesn’t understand that sometimes, it takes more than the 8 hour days.
And Nell…I’d like to say that I’ve also surpassed my hubby’s income. lol…I think that will definitely take a lot of time!

My family used to think I played too. DH, although supportive, always had some comment about “messing around” on the computer. But like Nell, my income has far surpassed hubby’s so his comments now are “are you taking applications?”. lol
He really wants to quit his job and work for me but I don’t like having all my eggs in one basket…. nor do I think we could work side-by-side 40 hrs a week.

Wow…making more than your hubby while working from home. That is really inspiring and encouraging that it CAN happen!

Great to see all these successful women!
Mel, I hear you about eggs in one basket. Although I think it’s “safer” to have them in a VA basket than in a passive income basket.
He could always start his own business seperate from yours

Well being single I don’t have to worry about what ‘hubby’ thinks about whether I’m just playing or what not. Of course I have to answer to myself when it’s time to pay the bills, etc.
I’m still not anywhere near where I want to be financially but slow and steady wins the race so I know one day I’ll be there.
Christina its been great watching you learn and grow and become successful since back in the beginning when you started as Kelly’s intern! Way to go!

My kids will tell you what they like, my son - cars, my daughter - animals, daddy - video games and mommy - “work”. It makes me a little sad to think that that is all I enjoy but I guess that’s cause I’m always at my computer it seems. Used to be it was my husband who was the computer geek. Now it’s me.
